Ryan here… back on the blog again! Just a heads up that I might re-hash a few things from Brook’s last couple of posts… umm… so that the lazy readers can catch up… yeah, that’s why. 😉
Last night was another long, long evening (which I thoroughly enjoyed) with our licensed contractor friend Matt from Hewn Inc. He spent the day yesterday going over our supplies list and working out the numbers, then reviewed them with me last night until about 1am. Looks like we will be JUST within our 40K budget for building supplies and labor! WEEEHOOO! Thanks for the parting buttered bagel Matt… 1am life saving snack for sure!
Brook and I took some time and planned out our schedule yesterday. As stated in her last post, we will be demolishing the garage on the lot. It must be torn down before our plans can be approved by the city. Before we demolish the garage though, we will let some goats do our landscaping. We don’t want any of the demolished materials getting into the plants that the goats will be eating. My sister will be assisting with this process. Her company is called Mountain Goatscapes and Soleil can tell you all about these amazing goats!
After goatscaping the land, we will have the garage demolished and grade our front yard. Then, I will rent a trencher and dig the trenches we need for running water from our water meter and our sewage line. I will lay the lines (since I will be the contractor and plumber for our house), and finally it will be time for laying the foundation!
We are hoping that our plans will be approved by the city soon so that we can pour our foundation before long and continuous days of 30 degree weather hit Asheville. Fingers and toes crossed on that one!

Do you have a breakdown of your budget you could share?
Hi Casey, we are keeping a ledger with every dollar spent as we go so that we will be able to present that at the end. Our total budget is $40,000. I can tell you that the most money is going into the foundation, insulation and the roof. If you have any specific item price questions we could probably give you an estimate, but its all a bit of a process and things still change quite a bit daily.
Cool. Thanks for the info. I’m in the process of trying to figure out what type of house to build at a site in upstate NY and I’m having trouble finding good information on the estimated costs of different options. It would be extremely helpful if you’d be willing to just break down that $40,000 into a couple categories such as the price for containers, the foundation, the insulation, the roof, electrical, and plumbing. If not, cool. I’ll just keep following along!
